I knew for my next position I wanted a fully remote job. The only good thing to come out of the pandemic is the prevalence and acceptance of remote working. With that in mind, I applied only to fully remote jobs.
I have been specializing in embedded software for much of my career. I've done other things, like web applications, desktop apps and GIS, but 90% of my recent experience is in embedded software. This field doesn't lend itself to remote work though, since there's some physical device you need to work with, and usually in a hardware lab with equipment like oscilloscopes, power supplies and logic analyzers. I thought I'd have to switch over to working on web applications where it's much easier to work remotely, and I thought I'd have a harder time finding such a job since I don't have a lot of relevant experience. But I found a lot of fully remote job postings for embedded software positions, so I applied to both.
Contrary to my introverted and anti-social tendencies, I mostly enjoy interviewing. The only interviews I don't like are the leet-code type interviews. I refuse to study for interviews and know I will not do well in these types of interviews. I think these companies are full of themselves and I don't want to work for them. I turn down these types of interviews straightaway. So I won't ever work for Facebook or Google. Not a big loss (might even be a win). There are hundreds if not thousands of other companies with a saner interview process.
